An Overview of Digital Scrapbooking
Digital scrapbooking is literally anything related to using a computer to enhance or create scrapbook pages. What is created in digital scrapping is heavily reliant on the programs and software that are used. Of course, digital scrapbooking is also dependent on the user and their skill levels. Creating a scrapbook digitally is not necessarily a shortcut to the more traditional methods. Digital scrapbooking can be extremely time-consuming and the work involved may not always be obvious to a non-computer savvy person who sees the finished results. Design is just as essential in digital scrapbooking as it is in conventional scrapbooking.
Digital scrapbooking is performed using a graphics program such as Photoshop or Paint Shop Pro, or a specialized scrapbooking layout programme which provides templates and clipart to create a layout with. The first stage for most people when they begin digital scrapbooking is to create design elements using their computer and these are printed, cut out, and then attached to regular scrapbook pages. The common elements of journaling or captions and toppers or headlines are increasingly created using a computer program and this is the beginnings of digital scrapbooking. The myriad of computer fonts that are available and can also be designed are ideal for scrapbooking. Computer clip art is another popular aspect of digital scrapbooking. Of course, one of the main benefits of using fonts and clip art created by digital scrapbooking is their flexibility. It is easy to resize the elements to fit a scrapbook page and there is also no limit to how many that can be produced if the cutting does not go to plan.
Digital scrapbooking naturally allows for the progression from scanning, editing and printing elements to actually creating entire scrapbook pages on the computer. The complex arrangements of decorations and text can be performed as many times as a person wants too without having to worry about losing pieces of paper or embellishments and digital scrapbooking is far more economical with the amount of space required. The pages produced can be printed out and the only item left to be added is the photographs. However, with the advent of digital photography, digital scrapbooking has now become completely computer-based. People can scan in existing photographs and manipulate them using their computer or even skip the step of having a printed version of their photograph altogether. Digital scrapbooking can incorporate photographs from digital cameras, camera phones and also those sent by email from friends and family.
